Getting Your Business Finances Ready for the End of the Year
But don’t fear, because there are several things you can do to prepare yourself for this yearly paper shuffle.
Organize Receipts and Categorize Expenses
If you haven’t been doing this all year, you may have some task ahead of you. But organizing your business receipts can go a long way towards getting you ready for what lies ahead.
For one, when doing your taxes, you want to have as much information as possible. If you only have a vague idea of how much you spent on your business over the year and no valid proof, it may end up costing you. Printer paper is one thing, but what about all the travel expenses you racked up? You want all that info in hand so you can properly log it (and claim the tax deduction!).
Another reason to properly organize your receipts is again about proof. You can write all the expenses you want on your tax forms, but in the end, the IRS needs proof they exist. If you submit your tax forms and you can’t back up your claims, there will be trouble ahead indeed!
You should also consider categorizing your expenses ahead of time. This way it’s much easier to add them up when it comes time to actually do your taxes. Some of the most common categories will be utilities, transportation, supplies, and advertising, though your business may have some unique ones.
Verify Income
Now is also a good time to check all the numbers regarding how much money you made in 2011. Many of Outright’s users are self-employed or independent business owners, so they must worry about paying in quarterly taxes. This is usually calculated based off yearly income, which for obvious reasons needs to be up to date.
Some freelancers or business owners like to go off the numbers they had the previous quarter. However, you may be paying too much if you do this. This is why we recommend recalculating your income as much as possible in order to be accurate. (Confused about quarterly estimated taxes? Check out our Quarterly Estimated Tax Cheat Sheet.)
Integrate Your Financial Accounts Into Outright
There’s no sense in doing this all by yourself. Keeping track of all your business expenses and income can be tough to do, especially when you have so much else to consider. So instead of tackling tedious data entry every time you collect from a customer or buy supplies, why not let Outright help?
Integrate your bank accounts into our intuitive software, and we’ll pull in all your transactions so you never have to spend hours and hours entering them by hand. We’ll also help with the aforementioned categorizing so that you can quickly and easily fill out your Schedule C at the end of the year and file your taxes.
This way, getting ready for the New Year is as easy as pumpkin pie. Now you can concentrate on redoing your shipping model and revamping your website instead of tackling annoying paperwork!

We're decking the halls!
For those crafters out there, here are a few tips to create your own wonderful designs: take several pieces of paper (plain or recycled for the environmentally conscious), cut them into long strips of 3 different lengths, loop the ends and then staple the loops. Repeat and then attach the two strips by cutting a small slit into the center of each and slide them into each other on a perpendicular line. Twenty-five or so staples later and you have a snowflake!
This year is going to be great and the decorations are only the very beginning of the fun! Come out to Public Assembly on the 3rd and see for yourself what all the excitement is about!Seriously, one of the best ways to get original gifts is to come support your local NY crafters!

Lion Brand Yarn Studio = Education - Innovation - Inspiration

In addition to its roster of knitting and crochet classes that teach you fundamental yarn skills, the Studio also offers master classes, not For masters but With masters, and workshops in a variety of specialties. For example, you can discover the simplicity of cable knitting, or learn how to crochet motifs. For those interested in one-of-a-kind yarns, the studio offers a workshop on dyeing self-striping yarn. Non-yarncrafters seeking to take a first easy step into the yarncrafting world can try their hand at learning how to use the Martha Stewart Crafts Knit & Weave Loom Kit from Lion Brand. You can find a full listing of their schedule here.
One class in a series of the upcoming master classes should be of particular interest to online sellers. Renowned photographer, author, and knitter Franklin Habit will share some of his photography skills at the Photographing your Fiber master class on December 2. He then returns on December 4 to teach two classes; one on working with antique patterns and another on lace knitting.
If you just want to test the waters and mingle with fellow knitters and crocheters before committing to a paid workshop, check out one of the Studio's free special events and yarn crafting groups. On the first Thursday of the month drop by the open yarn crafting night, or join the amigurumi group on every third Wednesday. The next special event will be a presentation by Franklin Habit on December 1 when he presents his discoveries on Impractical Magic: Oddities and Curiosities of Nineteenth-Century Handwork.
So this year, stop by the Lion Brand Yarn Studio and pick up a new skill for yourself or a friend.

Spreadsheet love + Outright.com

I love spreadsheets. Seriously, I do - it’s true. I guess it’s just the way my brain is wired. So, when I started my small business in earnest a few years ago, I was like “Financial accounting & bookkeeping? Oh, I got this one – I’ll make spreadsheets!”
…So why then, after nearly two years of manually keeping the books on various spreadsheets, was I finding it so difficult?
That is because entering transactions manually is really a drag – and as much as I love spreadsheets, accounting isn’t my forte. Especially when I know there is a better, and faster, way and who isn’t always super crunched for time? I recently started looking into software like Quickbooks and scouring blogs and websites dedicated to helping small businesses manage financial bookkeeping and taxes (don’t even get me started on taxes!). I was stressing myself out because I couldn’t seem to find a good, easy and affordable solution. I knew there must be a way to rope all of the devices, accounts and ways we collect money from our customers into one single application…
Through the grapevine, after the very successful launch of the recent Hello Etsy symposium, I heard about Outright.com. At first I was skeptical – was this just another one of those dashboard type programs (or like many apps that I come across these days that are pointless) - something claiming to be more useful than it truly is? …nonetheless I was intrigued, so I dug in some more.
Outright.com is a platform that loops in all of the different sources of income that a small business may use (like Paypal, bank accounts, Etsy, Ebay, etc.) and it keeps track of taxes all in one easy to use account. The creators of Outright.com came from Intuit (that’s Quickbooks, by the way), so we know they know their stuff. Launched in 2008, Outright has over 100,000 business users. I am now one of them.
For the past 2 months I have been a happy Outright.com user. I’ve linked my Paypal, Etsy, business checking and savings accounts and am ‘teaching’ the program to recognize my reoccurring entries. It’s simple, easy to use and I can keep a close eye on my spending with real clarity. Since I’m a visual person, the charts are one of my favorite features. You don’t have to be a savvy accountant to feel confident and knowledgeable about your finances.
If you are an Etsy seller, Outright is offering free accounts! Just hop on over to their Etsy seller Outright signup page for your free account and to learn more!

The Sketchbook Project & The Brooklyn Art Library — Our Cavalcade Sponsor
Step into the Library and you'll immediately be greeted by a 40-foot-long wall filled from floor to ceiling with contributions to the Sketchbook Project. The Sketchbook Project is an evolving library of artists' journals from more than 100 countries across the globe. Participation is open to everyone: Artists sign up to receive a blank sketchbook, then fill it up and send it back. The results are cataloged in the Brooklyn Art Library and exhibited to the public in person and online.
If you're feeling curious and itching to sketch, you're in luck: The Sketchbook Project Limited Edition Vol. 1 is accepting new participants right now! Open to just 5,000 participating artists, the Limited Edition is an experiment inspired by the Sketchbook Project. Every contributor to the Limited Edition Vol. 1 will be included in a series of art books documenting the project and each sketchbook will be exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Library. Together, the book series will provide insight into the imagination and process of each artist participating in the project and present an interpretive portrait of the Sketchbook Project community. Bound by the Brooklyn Art Library Press and hand-finished in the Library's own Williamsburg workshop, the book series will be published in the fall of 2012.
We're excited to spread the word about the Sketchbook Project and happy to welcome them to the Cavalcade. It's a great example of the creative community working together to produce something wonderful — and supporting other artists and artisans in return.
Don't forget to drop by the Brooklyn Art Library before or after your visit to the Cavalcade and be sure to tell them The {NewNew} sent you!
