Broadway Bears: Carrie Fisher's Wishful Drinking Bear

The Great White Way has a lot to offer, but one more contribution that may surprise the uninitiated is Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS charity. Drawing on the star power and talents of various New Yorkers, they raise money though such unique events as the upcoming Broadway Bears Auction (not to be confused with their fundraising strip show, Broadway Bares).

One bear appearing on the auction block this year has a NewNew connection, since it was made by Kari Love of Ikyoto.

The bear of the hour represents Carrie Fisher in her hit one-woman show, Wishful Drinking. Perhaps inspired by a combination of her 2009 Conan O'Brien appearance as the liberator of the masturbating bear and the proliferation of dolls made of her in the past (noted in the show itself), Ms. Fisher was eager to have a bear in her likeness.

The bear features a "Gypsy Lace" duster of assembled and sewn fibers creating a web-like texture of yarns made by Diane Prekup, who also made the original. Underneath, she wears midnight blue silk charmeuse pajamas cut from remnants of the original Broadway garments with a pocket filled with confetti from the show. Her sandals feature silver leather straps adorned with Swarovski crystal beads. Her wig is a reproduction of her famous Princess Leia hairstyle. She has also been signed by Carrie Fisher.

(Kari proudly shows off the signature on the bear.)

You can make a bid online until the auction on February 14, 2010, or even by phone during the event if you can't attend.

Crafty Presents at the {NewNew} Gift Exchange

Last weekend The {NewNew} had our new year's meeting and party and yes - crafty gift exchange! The meeting went great, we started with a craft item swap (which i think we should do every meeting as people are always looking to destash) and then everyone who brought a gift could take a gift from the grab bag. And as this was a great group of maker's I think most of the presents were handmade, which made them that much more unique and special. I look forward to seeing some other posts to see what other people got...

Amazing New Location for The Brooklyn Flea!!

The Brooklyn Flea open it's newest pop-up location two weekends ago, and The {NewNew} was glad to join them. Once a bank, 1 Hanson Place, is definitely the most jaw dropping location we have been in. Come visit us at this amazing location Saturday and Sunday, fresh {NewNew} members each day. There are only 10 weekends left!

Walking into this space is pretty breathe taking. The foyer ceiling is a beautiful celestial mosaic, in rich blues and touches of gold.

The main hall, where most of vendors are located, still has all old bank windows and tables, and the ceiling, another amazing mosaic, just has to been seen in person.

The antiques are all lined up in the middle, and the handmade vendors are all lined up inside the old teller windows. You can find the {NewNew} along the left side of the main room.

Stephanie of Mulry Jewels always crafting.

Nguyen of Knitknit always smiling! and me in the middle....

Go downstairs for more vendors and walk into the old vault for your favorite Flea food! The bank vault is Huge!

This market is Not to be missed! You only have a short time to come and see for yourself, so don't blow it!

In San Francisco, Winter Blues Become Winter Greens

The dreaded New York winter, bitter, cold, and dark, can sometimes make us want to sing the blues. One winter relief for all New Yorkers, is to plan a getaway to San Francisco. While San Francisco is famous for its windy summers, it offers mild and virtually wind-chill free winters. As an added bonus, the city remains green throughout the winter, and in more ways than one. It offers not only better winter weather, but great handmade and local shopping and the opportunity to live a more sustainable, greener life. All good things must come to an end, but before I leave San Francisco, I will share a few of its best green winter treasures.

1. Composting is the law

In addition to its citywide composting program, businesses in San Francisco do their part to reduce waste. Supermarkets and delis only give out paper or plastic bags upon request, coffee shops serve coffee to-go in compostable cups and forgo the plastic lids and ice cream shops use real spoons to give out samples and serve their ice cream in compostable cups coupled with compostable spoons.

2. Plants blossom in the winter

Despite the winter season, plants, trees, and flowers continue to blossom in San Francisco. And if that's not enough, palm trees are scattered throughout major boulevards and public spaces.

3. World-class thrift store shopping

Walking down Valencia Street, a commercial corridor in San Francisco's Mission district, one will come across at least one great thrift store every four blocks. These thrift stores are bustling shopping destinations. They are emblems of the strong "recycle and reuse" culture among San Franciscans.

4. Great-tasting local produce

If you have ever wanted to change your diet and eat vegan, San Francisco is the city for this change. Most restaurants and groceries offer a wide variety of great-tasting, locally farmed produce year-round.

5. Bicycling is safe and convenient

San Francisco offers some of the best urban riding around. Drivers and bicyclists respect each others rights-of-way, helping to make bicycling a viable and safe mode of transportation for all.

6. Local designer shops and co-ops are a main fixture on main streets

Local shops in San Francisco are plentiful and thriving. They have helped to revive many great neighborhood streets throughout the city. One of my favorites that I encountered was Studio 3579, which features the work of local designers Priya Sarawati, Joy Opfer, and Michael Stone.

7. Luscious parks and true public spaces

San Francisco's public spaces are top notch. They are open, vast, public and integrate seamlessly into the urban landscape. Among my favorites is Mission-Dolores Park, a great place to meditate, aimlessly wander, and unwind.

How-To: Beer Bread

Beer bread is one of those comfort breads that needs to be eaten while still warm out of the oven and works well with soups, stews, or any other hearty warming winter meal. It doesn’t take long at all as it doesn’t require any time to rise. The origins are not exactly known, but my grandmother made it, as does my mother and myself. A loaf of beer bread never lasts more than a day at most. Enjoy!

3 cups of flour

4 1/2 tsp baking powder

3/4 tsp salt

3 T sugar

1 - 12 oz can of beer (room temp is best) Cheap beer works just as well, if not better than some of the more expensive brands. When I say cheap, I mean of the “Schlitz” variety. This recipe comes from a woman that lived in Milwaukee after all. Feel free to experiment with the various ales and microbrews that are available now though.
Mix well.

Bake in greased loaf pan for 45 min to 1 hour at 350 degrees.

{NewNew} for Good:Disaster Relief in Haiti

I work for a non-profit Foster Care/Adoption agency which has many clients from Haiti, and as such we have been given suggestions to donate for Haiti's disaster relief.

In addition to my independent donation, I have discovered a way that perhaps more could be contributed for the relief effort in Haiti.

And so for the months of January and February, I pledge to donate a percentage of The Original Beadscarf net Etsy sales to The Red Cross in order to contribute to Haiti's disaster relief. Please visit http://beadscarf.etsy.com for more details.

Lingua Nigra is also running a similar campaign for Haitians in distress for the month of January.

Please feel free to comment here if you are doing any similar charitable effort within your own Etsy shop!

Thank you for your support.

Artistic Process: How did you learn the discipline you work in now?

"Mine's very dull for the "how" It's just learning in school.
Academy of Art College (San Francisco) for Illustration
Kensington & Chelsea College (London) for ceramics
Glasgow School of Art (Scotland) for more ceramics

My discipline (pun intended) is from working / seeing in sweatshops / manufacturing factories in Hong Kong and San Francisco. My parents are non-English speaking immigrants working in the S.F. garment district before they retired. "

Artistic Process: What inspires you?

"My daughter did a drawing of a cupcake that was so cute I had to try and make it in glass. Or course no real cupcake is safe from my hungry maw either. My oceana beads were inspired by the work and videos by renowned lampwork artist Kate Drew-Wilkinson. The family is quite crazed about the ocean: fishing, sailing, aquariums - never enough new aquariums to go to."
