Workspace Wednesday: featuring In Stitches and New York Clocks

Today I'm featuring TWO new York City artists who will be selling their handmade art at the Holiday Handmade Cavalcade.  You can find them selling on December 5, 2010 from 11am-8pm. This year’s Holiday Handmade Cavalcade will take place at OpenHOUSE Gallery in Nolita, New York.

First let's go into the studio of NYC artist Angel Jackson who owns CardsInStitches on Etsy.  Angel makes sassy, handmade notecards, sketchbooks and coasters from her 'tiny' one bedroom apartment where she lives with her husband and 5-year-old daughter.  She has carved out a niche for her hand-stitched art as you can see here:

Angel says, "My workspace is in my living room. It consists of a console table that a friend made for me out of pine. It is about 16" deep and 45" long; big enough to hold a small cutting mat and my necessary tools. Next to it is a small bookshelf with supplies (paper, glue, fabric, magazines) and books. All In all it's about 5'x5'."  And here is her view:
"It's great to work by the window. My apartment doesn't get any direct sunlight as I am surrounded by other buildings, so lighting is really an issue. There is a squirrel that comes to the window lately and he's in the process of building a nest on my fire escape! It's like working and watching the nature channel."  Here is Angel working hard, I love all the colorful thread she has on hand:

I bet she's making something cool, like this Right Stuff Collage, available for $15 in her Etsy shop:

Please stop by to say hello to Angel in person at the Holiday Handmade Cavalcade, or you can contact her directly through her InStitches shop on Etsy.  Thanks for sharing your little slice of heaven with us Angel!

Next up is Andria Alefhi of NewYorkClocks.  Andria is based in the East Village and works on her kitchen 'island' to make her spectacular one-of-a-kind clocks.  She uses found objects to make her postcard clocks, wall hanging clocks and retro feel clocks.  Her materials are varied, she even uses photos to make clocks.  You can see her here on one of her clocks:

Love that smile!  And here she is in the process of making some of her unique, handmade items:

Look at those muscles!  Here is her little island where she makes her fabulous clocks I think those tins are waiting to become clocks!  And that blue book-clock is super cute!  Check it out:

And here is a close-up of how the found objects become clocks, Andria uses her space creatively to make some wonderful handmade work!

Thank you Andria for sharing your slice of New York City with us!  Be sure to stop by the Holiday Handmade Cavalcade this Sunday and say hello to Andria and Angel.  There will be over 50 handmade artisans selling lots of goodies for your holiday gift list!  See you there.
