Favorite Tools: Wish by Felicity

In today's "Favorite Tools" post, Felicity of Wish by Felicity shares the tools without which she could not make her wire-wrapped sterling silver bracelets. These tools are, namely (as pictured above from left to right), round-nose pliers, wire-cutters, and flat-nose pliers. All three come into play particularly in forming the hook portion of the hook-and-eye clasps of the bracelets, so that's what we'll focus on.

The round-nose pliers come in first. Felicity begins by bending the wire around them into a "U" shape.
Using round-nose pliers to form a "U"

She then uses her flat-nose pliers to firmly grasp the end of the U together with the straight portion of the wire as she wraps the U end around the straight portion of the wire. The picture below shows the first wrap-around.
Firmly grasping doubled-up wire with flat-nose pliers

After wrapping the wire several times, Felicity uses wire-cutters to snip off the remaining "tail" of the wire, thus completing the loop.
Snipping off the tail with wire-cutters

Lastly, Felicity uses her round-nose pliers to carefully shape a hook out of the now-closed oval-shaped loop that she used the same pliers to make in Step 1 of the process. Full circle! Neat!
Using round-nose pliers to shape the hook

Clearly, there's much more loop-making and wire-wrapping involved in creating Felicity's gorgeous bracelets, and all three of the tools mentioned here play their various roles in the process. But if there's one tool Felicity uses especially much, it's her flat nose pliers. Specifically, she uses them to to push down and squeeze in the loose ends of the wrapped wire more closely to the straight pieces, both to keep them securely wrapped and to ensure that there are no sharp ends of sticking out.

This kind of care and attention to detail, in addition to an obvious sense of style and the skillful use of the tools of her trade all come together in Felicity's distinctive work. For more examples, check out her Etsy shop. Thanks for showing us a bit of how you do it, Felicity!

Until next time --

Happy Holidays from The {NewNew}!

A Happy Holidays greeting from The {NewNew}, expressed in the way we know best---through the things we make!

NY/NJ-based readers can take heart. It's not over 'til it's over, and it's not over yet. You still have a few hours to shop local for gifts, greeting cards, and holiday decorations. Or, you can just think of Christmas as a season and not worry about having everything in order by December 25. That's the way I do it, with apologies to everyone who follows the calendar more precisely!

Speaking of calendars, here are a couple that would make nice gifts for the people like me in your life. (We won't mind getting it after Christmas.)

Until next year --

All best,

Linda

Workspace Wednesday: featuring ElleFBijoux

Welcome to another edition of Workspace Wednesdays when I take you on a tour of an artist's studio straight in the heart of New York City.

Today we're touring the studio of ElleFBijoux, where owner Leslie creates lovely, sparkly jewels while looking out at the Chrysler Building.  She works at her dining room table across from her husband (who does french voiceovers and translation-- ooh la la).

Well hello Leslie!  Lookin' gorgeous making your jewels..  and look at that sunlight coming through the window!!  Love the view!

Here are some of the trays of goodies she works with, picking the pieces that reflect her mood of the day.  When she's on a roll they don't have dinner at the table for weeks.

Because where will they fit the food with all these baubles on the table???

I took a tour of Leslie's Etsy shop and found some great glittery items that totally reflect the joy of this holiday season.  Take a look at this Art Deco Dazzler available for $80.00 in the ElleFBijoux Etsy shop:

Or how about this Fifth Avenue Necklace available for $80 in her Etsy shop.

Well that concludes today's tour, hope you had as much fun as I did.  Thanks Leslie for opening up your home and studio to us!

Happy holidays,
Stephanie Maslow-Blackman

Shop Etsy with Facebook

So last week I told you how you can get your last minute shopping done with Etsy's Shop Local feature. Today we will look at the Shop Etsy with Facebook tool. It gives you some interesting insights into your friends and family. To find this go to: Etsy -- Buy -- Find Gifts, or go directly to etsy.com/gifts. You'll see this page:

Next, click Choose A Facebook Friend. You'll get a list of your friends that looks something like this:

Click on your friend's name and on the bottom select Okay. Here we'll choose Frosty the Snowman:

This list is based on the things your friend has marked as likes and interests. So Frosty, for obvious reasons, is interested in wool scarves, wool hats, and pipes. Now that you have an idea of what you might get for him you can continue shopping by limiting the price you want to spend on a gift, or by clicking "See More" to find other items in that category. Oh, and why am I so obsessed with this topic? Because I'm a textbook last minute shopper!!!!

Meet Our Sponsor: Shop Local with Etsy

If you're like me, you are finding yourself in a mild panic by now because the holiday shipping deadline for most online retailers is upon you. At this point, there is no way I can get a Christmas gift to my brother in Germany in time except. . . if I use Etsy's Shop Local feature.

As you probably know, Etsy is a global online marketplace that provides a way for people to "Buy, Sell, and Live Handmade." So let's say you are an exchange student in Brussels interning with the European Union and you need to find a great gift for your college roommate who lives in Queens. And, it has to get there in, let's say three days. And, faced with your student loans there is no way you can pay $75 in express shipping. To solve this dilemma, just log on to Etsy and you'll see the friendly front page. On the left side of the site is a box listing ways to shop. Click Shop Local.

This will take you to the Shop Local page.

In the text box, enter where you want to shop. In our example that would be Queens, New York. Click Search Location.

Look at all those pretty things you can buy from vendors located in Queens, New York.

Scroll through the shops, find something special like a pretty silver necklace from Irene C. Studio. Since shipping from Queens to Queens shouldn't take more than a day or two, your college roommate will receive a one-of-a-kind gift from you in time for the holidays without incurring huge shipping fees. But be sure to double-check the vendors' shipping policies, just in case. Oh, and did I mention that your purchase supported the local economy?

For more information about this feature, check out this Etsy article.

Happy Shopping.
