Small run silkscreening at home

There are few methods of making silkscreens. I found using drawing fluid to create a silkscreen is most direct and simple. A drawing is made on the screen with drawing fluid. Screen filler is then applied on the dried drawing fluid, which act as a resist. The filler hardens. The silkscreen is ready once you wash the drawing fluid away. No need for a darkroom! This method is great for small run posters, tote bags and t-shirts.

Supplies:
Silkscreen
Screen Drawing Fluid
Screen Filler
Brush for drawing
Squeege
Latex Gloves
Stick for stirring the fluid

Drawing the image: Tape a drawing or sketch for tracing on the inside frame. You can do freehand drawing if you like. Apply single even coat for best results.

Dry the screen in a level horizontal position. You can use a fan to speed up the drying time.

Coating the Screen: Stir the screen filler, then pour a bead of filler fluid on the same side that you applied the drawing fluid. Squeegee a smooth even coat of filler liquid over the screen. Dry the screen horizontally.

Washing Out: Use warm water through both sides of the screen, concentrating on the drawing fluid area. Do not use power washer, it might wash away the filler fluid.

Once the screen is dried, it is ready for screening.

There you have it!

Art For A {NewNew} Office

The worst part about a three-day weekend? Coming back to work!

None-the-less, duty calls. And as I recently realized, just cause you're in an office all day doesn't mean you have to look at bare walls. Whether you're in a cubicle or the corner office, you can always change your view with a digital stroll through (and a few purchases from) all the visual art the {NewNew} has to offer on Etsy.

Jenna Newton makes original art in many different media (pen and ink, paint, watercolor, just to name a few), at different sizes and price points. Whether you need a big painting in your big corner office, or a something slightly smaller scaled -- say cubicle sized -- she's got you covered.

Iris Lavy's shop, ArtbyIris, features both big, color-saturated canvases, as well as smaller-sized prints of some of her pieces.

CLineCreations is all about the Chinese arts in Brooklyn. Her brush paintings will bring a little bit of nature, delicately rendered, into your work space.

prismPOP offers a bold, pop sensibility perfect for a modern office. And if you want something truly personal, send her a hi-res pic and she'll make you a custom POP-portrait.

Randolph Pfaff makes fine art photographs of urban scenes. Just cause you don't have a window, doesn't mean you can't change your view.

PoofNY photog Anne Kristoff offers a lot of different views to choose from in her collections of fine art photography.

And the list goes on! I wish I had more space to list all of the wonderful fine art from the {NewNew} you'll find on Etsy. Where ever or whatever your workspace, look for the {NewNew} to find just the right art for your walls.

Father's Day Family Sketchbook

Each Father's Day my family struggles to think up a new and inventive way to say "We Love You dad"! My dad is not a Tie-Wearing-Dad, nor is he a Suit-Wearing -Dad, nor a Coffee- Drinking-Dad nor a Writing-In -Journals sort of Dad. So this has always been challenging.

He is more of a I'm-a-chemist -but-i-really-want -to-be-a-painter sort of Dad! The sort of Dad who would go out to a nearby farm on his lunch break to draw the cows as they grazed up and down in the grass.

So this year we decided to try and get the whole family involved in a present that he would really enjoy and be able to look back at for years to come. I had read about three artists that shared a sketch book and each would draw on one page and then pass it on to the next, with each drawing inspiring the next. I thought this would be a great project to replicate with my own family.

All you need is:
-1 sketch book or blank journal
-Various art supplies, pens pencils, markers etc
-A sizeable pre-paid US Postal Office envelope

Now all you need to do is have each family member draw on a given page. We started our's with the youngest - my nephew drew a whole "My Family" drawing which included hearts and dogs. His mother took some inspiration from that and drew her son with the two dogs in their yard. I am working on a portrait of my nephew.

Once we have all had our go at sketching in the book, I will present the book to my Dad on father's day with instructions (and a prepaid flat rate shipping envelope) for him to mail it back to the next participant so we can keep the family sketchbook active.

I think I've finally found a gift that he will truly love to take part in.
Do post comments below about any interactive gifts that you've participated in.

The {NewNew} Art Shops

For more Art, collage, painting, drawing, mixed media from the Metro New York City area,
search: newnewteam, art on Etsy

Allene La Spina - For a few years now I have been obsessed with drawing and illustrating shoes! My extensive library of shoes is a testament to that!

Claudia G Pearson - My name is Claudia. I graduated from Brighton Polytechnic, England with a First Class BA Honors Degree in Graphic Design. Disenchanted with typography I specialized in animation in my final year at college & went on to work with some of the leading animation companies in London. My spare time was spent traveling round the world & painting in my studio.

During a trip to New York in 1994 I met an illustration agent who wanted to represent me & thus my career as an illustrator bloomed. 2 months later I packed my bags & moved to the big apple where I've been working ever since.

Dwell Deep - I am an artist and illustrator and writer.

Faune Yerby - All my work is informed by my surrondings. Each piece speaking of Beauty, Nature, Science. The smallest things in Nature are given the same weight as those normally regarded as the most important. The work has all to do with the connections and coexistence of different places.

Jenna Newton - My work is concerned with the associative process that occurs through spontaneous mark-making. The drawings themselves correspond to the emotions and imaginations that are present as I work. The resulting pieces reference organic forms, architectural constructions, and graphic design. By freeing myself of the limitations of intention, the experience becomes intimate and direct. I am interested in making evident that which normally remains hidden.

Lipeony - Lipeony (Li-pe-ony) is a world of quirky imagination and odd daydreams gather. Lovingly drawn art prints and tiny hand stitched and stamped little critters are mementos of this place to share and keep. So kick off those pinching shoes and step back into the sneakers of a kid and relive those times when we weren’t so “grown up.”

My Zoetrope - What does My Zoetrope mean?: From the Greek words, zoe, "life" and trope, "turn". It may be taken to mean "wheel of life" or "living wheel." My Zoetrope is an ever-evolving wheel of my life and the silliness, craziness, prettiness, and absurdness of it.

Virginia Kraljevic - Thank you for stepping into my obscure world of French pigeons, moustaches, swirls, curls, trees, vines, teapots, clouds, and magical bunny rabbits. Imagining and creating are guilty pleasures for me and for my heart.

Ximi's Collage Art - Welcome to Ximi's Mod Nest! Here you'll find original retro modern inspired collage art and prints for children and grownups alike. All are created by collage artist, Ximi Rodriguez. Every single little detail is drawn, cut and glued by her hands, no templates ever used. Her love for all things vintage, nursery rhymes and color fuel her imagination when creating all of her pieces!
