Glücksschweine aka lucky pigs are a traditional gift in Germany to wish someone luck in the New Year. I was able to dig up two explanations for this custom:
- In the middle ages the loser of a competitive sporting event would take home a pig as a consolation prize
- Pork was a traditional New Year's dish and those people who could afford such expensive meat were considered lucky

In my family, we always have pork and sauerkraut for luck on New Years. But no one knows why.. we just always have. So thanks for the info :)
