Happy New Year

Glücksschweine aka lucky pigs are a traditional gift in Germany to wish someone luck in the New Year. I was able to dig up two explanations for this custom:
  1. In the middle ages the loser of a competitive sporting event would take home a pig as a consolation prize
  2. Pork was a traditional New Year's dish and those people who could afford such expensive meat were considered lucky

To bring you some luck in 2009, here is a roundup of pig related crafts:

The Crocheted Pig
Here is an amigurumi piglet designed by Sharleen of mmm-fruit.com and available on crafster.org.

The Sewn Pig

Runo has an impressive selection of interesting doll patterns on her site including this little piggy.

The Greeting Card Pig

Here's a greeting card you can use to wish someone luck who lives far away.

The Origami Pig
Need to make a pig on the fly? Just follow these instructions.

The Cookie Pig

All this piggishness has made me hungry. If you are similarly inclined, try these piggies.

My Favorite Pig(s)

Brigitte of Roman Socks has put together a fabulous tutorial for these cool pigs.

The Shopping Pig
And finally, some pig-related etsy finds. Happy New Year und guten Rutsch.
