Save the Date! April 24th is the Spring Handmade Cavalcade!

Shop Sustainably this Earth Day with the {New New} at the Spring Handmade Cavalcade.

This spring, make eco-conscious shopping and gift-giving a part of your Earth Day tradition. Join the independent artists and makers of the {New New} at the second annual Spring Handmade Cavalcade, where local designers and makers will feature the best of their handmade collections.

Why Earth Day? Because {NewNew} member artists care about New York and its sustainability.  To reduce waste, {NewNew} member artists use little packaging, recycle and upcycle materials, and create and sell locally.  At the Spring Handmade Cavalcade, you will find a variety of these sustainable goods including housewares made from post-consumer waste, jewelry made with recycled metals, and much, much more.

The Spring Handmade Cavalcade will take place on April 24th, from 10am - 5pm at Berry Park, 4 Berry Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  Be among the first 100 people to arrive and receive a free, limited-edition goody bag full of wonderful eco-inspired giveaways.

{New New} ECO TIP #1 - When shopping, skip the plastic bag and use a tote bag instead.  You can make your own tote bag using an old t-shirt.  For this and other DIY tips on how to recycle, upcycle and reuse items to create new treasures and live more sustainably, come back for more tips and ideas!

The {NewNew} POPs up at 93 Nevins

The {NewNew}, will participate in this year's Atlantic Art Walk by highlighting artists that use environmentally-friendly materials in their creations at 93 Nevins Street - reclaimed from a building derelict for 20 years, this new townhouse was created with the idea to be as green as possible.

Art Walk is a free, self-guided tour of open artist studios and area exhibitions, a range of public art projects, special events, with local merchants hosting a range of artwork and events. Our pop-up shop will be open on both days of the Art Walk where participants in the self-guided, curated tour will get a taste of the variety of handmade items that are created in the local community.
Find green gifts made from sustainable materials such as silkscreened apparel, fine art drawings and prints, handmade ceramics, paper goods, plush toys, jewelry and housewares from shops like Cakehouse, Wabisabi Brooklyn, and KnitKnit.

As always, we try to help you shop local within the top tier of craft.

Brooklyn Homeshow May 17

LOCAL ARTIST OPENS HOME TO THE PUBLIC FOR A HANDMADE SHOPPING EVENT
Brooklyn Homeshow to take place May 17, 2008, in Downtown Brooklyn

On May 17th, 2008 a local artisan will open her downtown Brooklyn loft to the public for an intimate shopping event. Thirteen local artists and designers have been invited to showcase their handmade goods and to meet with shoppers for the one-day-only shopping event at 170 Tillary Street #706. The event's website is: http://freewebs.com/bkhomeshow.

The Brooklyn Homeshow will showcase a variety of locally-made goods including home decor, art and prints, toys, bath and beauty products, jewelry, paper goods, and apparel and accessories. A limited number of goody bags with free samples will be made available to shoppers who pre-register to attend. Refreshments will be served throughout the day.

First debuted in March 2008, the Brooklyn Homeshow is run by a group of sellers from the Brooklyn-based website Etsy, which is an online marketplace for handmade goods. The Homeshow is a grassroots extension of the online Etsy marketplace. One of the goals of the Homeshow is to support conscious consumerism by encouraging the purchase of locally-made goods. The show on May 17th will be much like the first Brooklyn Homeshow, with some new sellers participating in order to offer a larger variety of items for sale.

Karin Persan, who is hosting the event, says "It's really a pleasure to be hosting our second Brooklyn Homeshow. I have been doing larger craft shows for some time now and it's really nice to be a part of a smaller, more intimate event. It has been a great experience bonding with these extremely talented artists through Etsy. We are all very proud to be working together to create this unique show, where you can personally meet with buyers, and have a really fun time!"

To register for attendance, visit the Brooklyn Homeshow website at http://www.freewebs.com/bkhomeshow. Admission is free of charge. A limited number of goody bags are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The event will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2008 from 10:00am to 5:00pm at 170 Tillary Street, Suite 706 in downtown Brooklyn.

Re-cap of the Brooklyn Homeshow

Yesterday was the Brooklyn Homeshow, a unique event brought together by Michelle of Chelleline who graciously offered up her apartment to nine other vendors to host a one day shopping event. We set up shop early in the day, and opened the doors to shoppers by 10.

Despite pouring rain, many people came from New Jersey, Queens, and even Conneticut to support the indie community. It was really great. It was fun to chat with people and find out about how they heard about the show.

The vendors offered products ranging from original photography, gocco prints, collage cards, hand made jewelry, felted pin cushions, crocheted pins, scarves, neckwarmers, silkscreened shirts, unique dresses and bags, and even original photography. It really was quite a range, that all worked really well together, something for everyone.

Connecticut Team at the Brooklyn Homeshow

Woooo! It has been quite an afternoon! I have been a busy little beaver, working on all sorts of exciting new projects. One of them being my table display for the Brooklyn Home Show! I think if I were any more excited about this I'd wet myself.
Aside from being a devoted member of the {NewNew} York Etsy Street Team, I am also team leader of the CT Team. So my little fantasy is to have these teams work in conjunction with each other. One big happy Etsy Team family! In my efforts to do that, I have offered the CT team my table to display some of their handiwork at this upcoming event, as well as my own. It took a lot of blood sweat and tears, but I think I am finally getting somewhere with this.
I have included some pictures as a sneak peek of what my table will offer! But by all means stop by the show! The ladies on this New York team are incredibly talented and saavy crafters! I am constantly inspired to make my work better. So stop in and say hello! We'd love to see you there! (More details are available at http://www.freewebs.com/bkhomeshow)
