Yo! MOMA! Tim Burton Exhibit is NewNew

The New York Modern Museum of Art is running an exhibition of film maker Tim Burton's work from November 22- April 26, 2010. This amazing collection of paintings, drawings, videos, sculpture, and film props is drawing record crowds of all ages.
Just as a Burton movie is unmistakable (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas) Burton's art is just as distinctive: a gallery of odd creatures and characters taken from a variety of inspirations such as Japanese monster movies, side show carnivals, sci-fi films and other fantastical expressions of Pop Culture that have tickled the quirky director's fancy.

The exhibit includes over 700 examples of Burton's sketchbooks, drawings, paintings, and amateur films. He made seven sculptures for the exhibit, and music from long time collaborator Danny Elfman plays in the galleries.
Crafters and artists in any medium can find inspiration at this show. Consider Kimm Chi, who creates beautiful silkscreened apparel featuring bold and abstract designs.
Although Kimm's work is very different from the work of the famous director, she still left the museum feeling inspired and in admiration of Burton's ability to be so prolific. She told us that while at MOMA, she chatted with a guard who told her that the exhibit was an unexpected hit for the museum, drawing in enormous crowds like Matisse or Picasso, and that the museum was amazed with the response, and it was great to really see people of all ages appreciate the work outside of just the movies. Kimm was moved to blog about her response to the show here.

TODAY you have a chance to win a piece inspired by Tim Burton's artwork from the Etsy shop Lennymud. This whimsical monster mug can be yours just by leaving a comment below and letting us know what you would like to see more of on this blog.

Crafty Presents at the {NewNew} Gift Exchange

Last weekend The {NewNew} had our new year's meeting and party and yes - crafty gift exchange! The meeting went great, we started with a craft item swap (which i think we should do every meeting as people are always looking to destash) and then everyone who brought a gift could take a gift from the grab bag. And as this was a great group of maker's I think most of the presents were handmade, which made them that much more unique and special. I look forward to seeing some other posts to see what other people got...

The {NewNew} at OOAK ny

Last night was the preview night for the One of a Kind show at Pier 94 off of 55th street. The place was packed with vendors and customers sipping wine and browisng the artisan handmade wares from shops around the country. Really the cream of the crop - it was very inspiring to see it all in one place. I can't believe this was the first show in NY, glad they decided to branch out and take the show on the road!

Browsing through the aisle, i cam across many friendly faces of people i know.I got some great photos of Caja Jewelry, and JDavis Studio and home design by Pink Baby Mouse....

Purple Rain at the {NewNew}

One of the hot new colors this year is purple. Whether it is shades of eggplant, aubergine, amethyst, lilac or grape, purple is popping up everywhere, including on The {NewNew} team. Of course, this great color is showing up in the Indie fashion front.

You can wear it with these shirts from team members
Kimmchi
and east4thstreet.

Or carry your life in this eggplant bag by LaPistolera.
You can adorn yourself in fabulous jewelry like these earrings from Jantar and pulpsushi.
Or maybe this glamorous necklace from AdornmentsNYC.

For some fun purple, try this ring from Metalsugar.

Fashion is not the only place where we are seeing shades of purple.
Check out this fab lamp from YoursTrulyxxx.

Add these soy candles from Dewonapetal.

Who wouldn't want this bird from
littleloveblue decorating any part of their home?

Your skin will be happy to have these lovely
olive oil and cocoa butter soaps from ayelet17.

Purple is hitting the paper world, too.
Collect treasures, thoughts or creative ideas
in one of these great little scrapbooks from
Waisze or CollectiveElements.

Who wouldn't love to receive
one of these beautiful cards from
elbeescreations or fubabee.

And don't forget the kids with a
purple toy from KarensMonsters.
Patricia is my favorite!

Whatever your shade, let the purple rain fall!

Re-cap of the Brooklyn Homeshow

Yesterday was the Brooklyn Homeshow, a unique event brought together by Michelle of Chelleline who graciously offered up her apartment to nine other vendors to host a one day shopping event. We set up shop early in the day, and opened the doors to shoppers by 10.

Despite pouring rain, many people came from New Jersey, Queens, and even Conneticut to support the indie community. It was really great. It was fun to chat with people and find out about how they heard about the show.

The vendors offered products ranging from original photography, gocco prints, collage cards, hand made jewelry, felted pin cushions, crocheted pins, scarves, neckwarmers, silkscreened shirts, unique dresses and bags, and even original photography. It really was quite a range, that all worked really well together, something for everyone.

Jewelry Workshop at Etsy Part 2

BrooklynButterfly.Etsy.com and I headed back to The Etsy Labs last weekend for the second part of our jewelry workshop.

It was awesome, Danielle taught us the fundamentals of soldering with a torch, as well as annealing and pickling. We made this super awesome feminine ring. I couldn't stop staring at it, I love it :)

Though I was a bit dangerous with the torch in hand - Angie was really great! She forwarded me some other pieces that she made at previous workshops at Etsy.

COOL - right?! Hopefully they will offer some more instruction, as I don't think I am ready for a full set up in my apartment at the moment.

Jewelry Workshop at Etsy

On February 3rd, Etsy Labs had a beginner's jewelry workshop with Danielle, aka PreciousPups.Etsy.com which I attended with about five other women. I got to meet some great ladies - one of whom, was BrooklynButterfly.Etsy.com, another member of The {NewNew} Street Team (it was great to meet you!).

I do some jewelry on the side but really wanted to brush up on my technique - and this class was perfect for that. Danielle went over the basics of wire working, wrapping and polishing using the flex shaft. I learned that a bic pen is the perfect size to form ear wires and that I need to get myself some polishing compound! I go back next week for a mini workshop on soldering and the torch - I can't wait!
